The Howard County Food Bank is preparing to feed more people than ever before.
“This year, with the government shutdown and the lapse in SNAP benefits, we realized that we need to increase our inventory of Thanksgiving items, as well as just regular food items like fresh produce, milk, eggs, meats that families are going to need that they weren’t able to purchase during that time,” said Tracy Broccolino, president of the Community Action Council of Howard County. “We’ve purchased more turkeys than we’ve ever had to purchase.”
The food bank will provide Thanksgiving meal items for people to collect, and host a new Thanksgiving dinner for those in need on Thanksgiving Day.
“We have responded in ways that may have been atypical in the past, but we know that there’s definitely increased need this year,” Broccolino said.
The Thanksgiving dinner is a collaboration between the Community Action Council of Howard County, Howard Community College and Howard County Tourism on the campus of Howard Community College.
It is for residents and students in need who have already received invitations.
