Moderate Income Housing Units (MIHU) Rental Assistance Program

About the Program:

The Community Action Council of Howard County (CAC) in partnership with the MIHU Program, is offering rental assistance to moderate income residents living in Howard County. The MIHU Rental Assistance Program may provide up to 12 months of partial rental support depending on eligibility. Also, if you are currently behind on rent, CAC can pay up to 3 months’ worth of overdue rent.

Once you are enrolled in the program, you should be willing to set goals aimed at improving your income and becoming self-sufficient. Additionally, you will need to reach certain milestones; otherwise, you risk being dropped from the program.

Eligibility

  • You are employed and receive a steady income
  • Your monthly income (before deductions) is at least equal to your monthly rent
  • You currently are not receiving any federal or state funded housing assistance (Housing Choice Voucher, Section 8, BRHP, etc.)
  • You are a legal U.S. citizen and live in Howard County
  • You have not received housing assistance from CAC in the last 12 months
  • You are within maximum income limits for program eligibility

Additional Benefits

  • Access to regular check-ins with CAC team members
  • Financial coaching sessions
  • Assistance completing additional documents to see if you qualify for other assistance
  • Opportunity to have your property upgraded by CAC's Weatherization Department

Rental support is determined by

  • Completion of Crisis to Thrive Assessment
  • Level of self-sufficiency
  • Amount of funding available
  • Amount of time you will need to accomplish your income/employment goals
