Why Certain Home Repairs Are Needed Before Weatherization
Weatherization is the process of making a home more energy efficient, which helps lower energy bills and improve indoor comfort. However, homes with certain problems can’t be weatherized right away. Issues like roof and basement leaks, mold, pest infestations, or structural damage can make a house ineligible for weatherization work.
Why is this? For example, upgrading the insulation in a home with roof leaks or mold could ruin the new insulation and even make the mold issues worse and harder to fix. These issues can affect not only the home’s energy efficiency but the safety and health of its occupants as well.
In the past, we’ve been unable to help families with weatherization services because of these types of issues, even though they are otherwise qualified. However, CAC is excited to launch this new repair program to help these and other homeowners improve their homes and take advantage of no-cost weatherization.
How the New Repair Program Works
This program is funded by the local Howard County government, the US DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program, and a grant through HUD’s Healthy Homes Program.
The types of repairs covered will include:
- Fixing roof and basement leaks
- Addressing mold and moisture problems
- Repairing structural issues
- Addressing pest infestations
- Other repairs needed to make homes safe for weatherization
