How to Get Started With CAC’s Maryland Weatherization Assistance Program

1. Review Our Eligibility Guidelines

Before you get started with CAC’s weatherization assistance program, check if you qualify. Program eligibility is based on household income and size. Both homeowners and renters can participate. Eligibility is available to residents across Maryland, including in 18 counties and Baltimore City.

2. Fill Out an Online Intake Form

Once you know you qualify, the next step is to fill out our online intake form. This is a simple five-step form that asks for basic information like name, address, and the services you’re interested in. 

After we receive your intake form, we’ll review all the information. In some cases, we may require you to fill out a complete weatherization assistance program application.

3. Schedule an Energy Assessment

After your home is approved to receive no-cost weatherization services, the next step is to schedule an energy assessment. During this assessment, our energy auditors do tests on your home to see how it uses energy. We measure the air tightness of your home and determine where you’re losing energy and how it can be fixed.

We also check to make sure that your home is “weatherization-ready.” This means it’s free from any structural damage, mold, asbestos, lead paint, or sewage problems. If we determine your home isn’t ready, that’s okay. We’ll tell you what we found. Then, once you have those issues fixed, we can proceed.

4. Schedule Your Weatherization Work

After we complete your energy assessment and your home is deemed ready, we schedule contractors to complete the work. It usually takes about two weeks after the assessment to submit the work order. We work with highly vetted local partners, so you can trust you’re getting service from skilled contractors, whether that’s insulation and air sealing, or a heating and cooling upgrade.

Weatherization work can take a couple of weeks to complete because sometimes multiple crews have to be scheduled. You do not have to be home when they’re doing the work.

5. Complete a Quality Control Inspection With CAC

Finally, we’ll schedule a Quality Control Inspection with our team once the weatherization work is done. Sometimes we may also have to schedule an inspection with the county. Both are important to ensure that the upgrades will truly help your family save money.
